For decades, my friend, the renowned color photographer Jay Maisel, kept telling me, “You gotta go to Morocco!”
And having had the good fortune to travel to numerous countries and all seven continents, it was high on my list but for one reason or another, I kept missing it.
Finally in May of 2022 the opportunity to travel there evolved and, as promised, it did not disappoint.
Exotic people, delicious food, historic culture, wonderful architecture, spectacular landscapes all shrouded in wonderful light, shadow and color and yet… a very difficult place to shoot.
For the most part, the people do not like being photographed for various reasons.
And while not wishing to be intrusive, I still wanted to make my photographs.
So with the help of our local Moroccan guides mixed in with occasional bits of “right place, right time”, special moments were captured while, of course, some were lost.
I’ve always felt that photography is a lot like fishing… sometimes you go out and catch lots of fish and some days not too many.
So what do you do?
Keep going back out and hoping for another good day.
